Changing Jobs…The Constant Conundrum!
Now that the economy is on an upswing and a new year has begun, companies have started hiring again, and potential candidates are starting to ask themselves…
Should I Stay or Should I Go?!?
Keep in mind, that the grass always looks greener from the other side of the street, but it may not be so plush and green, once you get there. So, before you jump ship, take my advice and ask yourself the following questions:
- Is your current position is allowing you to utilize your strengths?
- Do you feel like you are constantly growing and learning?
- Is there any potential for upward mobility or a promotion?
If you answered “No” to any of these, I’d suggest you go a step further, and find out if there is someone within your organization who would be able to help you achieve these things. Such as a mentor, who can teach you new things and can “groom” you for a role, that’s bigger and better than what you have now. Or discussing with a manager or hiring authority about the possibility of a promotion, and what steps you would need to take, to achieve that goal.
But, if in the end, you feel that you’ve reached your full potential with this company and in this role, then it’s probably time to start looking.
And to begin looking, here’s how I’d suggest you proceed:
- Don’t tell your employer you’re unhappy and going to start looking
- Don’t quit without having a signed offer letter in hand
- Do find an experienced recruiter that you can trust, so they can search confidentially on your behalf, without your employer knowing.
And when you start comparing positions, consider what J.T. O’Donnell, CEO of Careerealism Media and Career HMO, says: If you treat yourself as “…a Business of One!”And seek out “a company that you’re able to work WITH…not for” you’re next move, may just be your last.
